Why Support School Choice?

There is a growing tide of support for school choice across the USA. School vouchers have been available in parts of the USA since at least the early 1990s. Usually these have been offered only to low-income families so that to receive choice families had to have income under some income limit (for example, no more than twice the federal poverty line for a family of a given size). In 2023, several states introduced laws to offer “universal school choice” which means vouchers can be claimed by all families regardless of income. These states include Arkansas, Iowa, Florida, West Virginia and Utah (however in some places the income restrictions will gradually be abolished over a three-year period).

There is evidence to believe that students in schools supported by school vouchers have achieved many favorable outcomes including:

  • Higher graduation rates
  • Higher college entry rates
  • Higher math scores
  • Lower incarceration rates
  • More diversity in the public school system where vouchers exist
